Famous singer, musician and songwriter Gregg Allman, who played an essential role in the invention of Southern rock and the driving force behind the formation of the Allman Brothers Band is no more. He passed away at his home in Savannah, Georgia, on Saturday (May 27, 2017), due to complications from liver cancer. He was 69 years old at the time of his death.

According to his manager Michael Lehman – the late singer’s funeral will be held on Saturday, June 3. He will be buried next to at a private ceremony in Macon, Georgia. He also added that fans/mourners are asked to line the street for the funeral procession along the mile-long route from Snow’s Memorial Chapel to the Rose Hill Cemetery – where the rock pioneer will be buried alongside his brother Duane Allman and fellow Allman Brother Band member Berry Oakley. They are also requested to wear jeans and, at the dressiest, sports coats as per Allman’s request.

Allman was born Gregory LeNoir Allman at St. Thomas Hospital on December 8, 1947 in Nashville, Tennessee, to Willis Turner Allman and Geraldine Robbins Allman. His elder brother Duane and he started their music career professionally at the very young age and after working with several projects they have formed the Allman Brothers Band in 1969 with Dickey Betts, Berry Oakley, Butch Trucks and Jai Johanny “Jaimoe” Johanson. They have released their very first album in the same year which was self-titled one.

In 1971 Duane died in a motorbike accident Macon, Georgia which left Gregg devastated. His father was murdered by a hitchhiker in Norfolk, California in 1949 right after the Christmas Day, and on July 2015 his mother passed away at the age of 98.

Gregg Allman has also enjoyed a successful solo career by releasing his debut album titled – Laid Back in 1973.

During his lifetime, he has married or kept relationship with many women times. His partners included Shelley Kay Jefts, Janice Blair, the famous popstar Cher, Julie Bindas, J. P. Galiana, and Stacey Fountain. In 2012, he announced his engagement to Shannon Williams on the Piers Morgan Show, and the two were married in February 2017.

Allman had five children:

  • son Michael Sean Allman (born 1966), from a relationship with former waitress Mary Lynn Green;
  • son Devon Allman (born 1972), lead singer of Honeytribe, from his marriage to Shelley Kay Jefts;
  • son Elijah Blue Allman (born 1976), lead singer of Deadsy, from his marriage to Cher;
  • daughter Delilah Island Allman, from his marriage to Julie Bindas; and
  • daughter Layla Brooklyn Allman (born 1993), lead singer of Picture Me Broken, from a relationship with radio journalist Shelby Blackburn.
